An unexpected footling breech birth with transfer to hospital

An unexpected footling breech birth with transfer to hospital.

“Her words are ingrained on my memory, as is the sound of controlled panic / urgency in her voice. She said, “Oh God; it’s a foot, it’s breech, dial 999 NOW, get an ambulance, it’s a footling breech. Tell them it’s urgent”.”

“Four days after the birth I met with the midwife for a debrief. It was a useful conversation and happened at the right time in my recovery. Prior to that I was just grateful all was well, and wouldn’t have asked the right questions. By day four, though, relief had given way to anger. I was angry that despite my desire to be in control and have a natural delivery, and my best efforts to secure that by aiming for a homebirth, it had transpired to be a labour characterised by panic and lack of control and I felt the midwife could help me understand why. The crux of it was why hadn’t I been given the chance to continue labouring at home, with the medical team and ambulance waiting outside to intervene if need be. Why hadn’t my body been allowed to do its job?”

“Just one other thought … all the midwives in the hospital were very positive about the birth and congratulated me on the natural delivery and telling me I had done well. In contrast, the two doctors I spoke to took a much more negative point of view and focused on the fact that an ambulance delivery was ‘less than ideal’.”

A planned c-section for footling breech (with video)

A planned c-section for an awkward breech with one foot up and one foot down, and a family history of breech (with a video):

“I don’t feel guilty about doing it, though. There were no doctors or midwives on the island who would deliver a breech baby. Giving her position, I wasn’t going to risk doing it by myself. In the head, we weighed our options and felt fairly in control of the whole process. Still, I feel some disappointment in missing out of the experience that I was envisioning, though I hope with our next baby we can have a home birth after cesarean.”

A hospital breech birth from the dad’s perspective

“They assured her that the epidural tube was not connected, and told her she had to trigger another pushing wave. They told me to kiss Nicole, to try and help the process, because kissing can promote the release of oxytocin, which stimulates uterine contractions. And so, with about a dozen people around the operating table, I started making out with my wife. ”

A hospital breech birth despite lack of supportive doctors…

““Just in case” the doctors brought me to the O.R. to deliver the baby. The O.R was filled with staff (15-20 people) who couldn’t resist seeing this unique occurrence. I was givenan IV and put on the operating table (HORRIBLY uncomfortable). Here too I continually had to hear from the staff that I was putting my baby at risk of dying. Even as our sweet Emmette was coming down the birth canal the doctor was asking to do a c-section.”

“One of the mottos of midwifery is “the care is not in the catch” so I reminded Elizabeth that it was because of her diligent determination to help me have a natural birth that I was able to achieve just that!”

A baby successfully turned by moxibustion at 38.5 weeks!

“Later that evening I laid down. I felt like I had terrible indigestion, like my whole stomach was just upset. I didn’t feel any particular moving, just all over cramping. It didn’t feel like contractions, it felt like gas. So, I let it go, and before long it subsided and I went to sleep.”
